Myths & Facts of Brow Tinting

More than any other feature, eyebrows define a person’s face. It’s also a fact that no two people’s brows are the same, from shape, size, color to texture. Some options for enhancing brows: pencils, microblading, brow lamination and brow tinting. Let’s talk about brow tinting -- a great intro procedure to get bolder brows without a needle.

What is brow tinting?

Brow tinting creates fuller and thicker brows by applying dye. It has the same effect as microblading. It can be done professionally or at home with DIY kits.

What is the procedure?

The procedure takes about 15 minutes. When done at a studio, first talk to the client about how they want it to look. Then, clean the brows and apply a layer of petroleum jelly to prevent skin staining.

Mix the dye and apply it in the direction of hair growth, then apply a second layer in the opposite direction. After 5 to 10 minutes, the dye will set. Wipe away the excess with a damp paper towel. Stains will wash away in a day or two.

How often do you do it?

Brow tinting fades after 4 to 6 weeks, unlike microblading which is semi-permanent. Exfoliating and using oil-based products will cause the tint to fade faster. Brow tinting requires touch-ups every 4 to 6 weeks.

What color do you use?

Brow color can either match the hair color or not. Typically, choosing a color that is a shade darker than your hair color will make brows stand out and liven up the face. However, some suggest going a shade or two lighter than the hair color.

Should you do it at home?

Brow tinting dye is not regulated. The dye could cause allergic reactions or irritate the skin. We recommend doing a patch test prior to brow tinting to make sure that you aren’t allergic to the dye. The dye in DIY tinting kits are usually not as strong as professional ones.
